Do you want to learn real Italian? Not just 'get by' but speak and understand the language properly?

Dear Friend

If you want to speak Italian confidently and effectively, this package is for you. Accurate Italian teaches you:

  • how to approach learning Italian and prepare the ground for success
  • how to pronounce Italian like a native
  • how the language works, so you know what you’re saying and can understand the answer that comes back.
Accurate ItalianThe e-book Italiano per Principianti (Italian for Beginners) takes you from zero to conversational Italian in clear, well explained steps.

If you’ve never tried to learn Italian before, this package is all you’ll need to get you speaking accurate Italian confidently.

If you have tried to learn Italian before and failed, the bonus e-book How to Learn Italian will explain why you didn’t achieve your goal last time and show you how you WILL ACHIEVE it this time.

Italian for Beginners is a very accessible introduction to the language which takes the guesswork – and thus the fear – out of speaking Italian. It’s a practical, hands-on approach that tells you what you need to know but then gets you practising it straight away.

The Italian Pronunciation Guide teaches you the few simple rules of Italian pronunciation/spelling. You can then test yourself by reading aloud 33 Italian words - chosen to illustrate and reinforce the points you’ve learnt – and comparing your pronunciation with that of a native Italian.

Audio is also included in the Italian for Beginners e-book and, just to make sure you’ve got lots of accurate Italian to listen to, we’ve added some extra recordings for you as a bonus.

Who am I?

My name is Georgina Kirk and years ago I learnt Italian from scratch, just like you. I have no Italian relations and I had no Italian friends when I first started (though now I have many, both in Manchester, where I live, and in Italy). I was inspired to learn Italian after my mother took my sister and me to Italy on holiday. I was 13 and had never been to such a beautiful and exciting place; I fell in love with it immediately and insisted we go back every year, until I was old enough to go by myself.

Italian was patchily taught at my school and it took me a while to get properly to grips with the language. I’m so glad I persevered! I learnt what I could from the lessons and supplemented it with teach-yourself books, none of which was great but the combination got me by. I went on to study Italian language and culture at university, to live in Milan for two years and subsequently to open my own language school in Manchester.

Italian for BeginnersI wrote Italiano per Principianti to give you what I wish I’d had when I was a beginner: clear, concise explanations and a slow, steady build-up.

I’ve been teaching languages for over 15 years and this e-book developed out of the many grammatical explanations and worksheets I’ve given to my students of Italian over this decade and a half plus. Everybody learns differently, of course, but this is the distilled product of many attempts to put the language and its workings across to people of various ages, backgrounds and levels of linguistic aptitude.

My colleague Daniela Spini provided valuable input from the perspective of a native Italian.

What's so great about this course?

As I say, I've been a language teacher for over 15 years and I've tried out every kind of course material, from teach-yourself to classroom-use, and I haven't found one that really meets the needs of adult students of Italian.

The problem is usually that they structure the course by subject area rather than by grammatical point, so they introduce concepts that are far too difficult far too soon. For example, it makes sense, in a way, to begin with a chapter about meeting people. We learn that to ask 'what's your name?', we say 'come si chiama?'. Fine, OK, I can remember that but, unless you can explain which word means what and how it works, I'll always be having to memorise phrases without really understanding them and I might as well just use a phrase book.

The few books I've found that are organised by area of grammar may provide a handy reference for teachers but render themselves almost completely useless to the student by using vocabulary and structures that are way beyond the scope of someone studying that level of grammar. I've seen past tenses, conditionals and even subjunctives used in exercises designed to help people learn the present tense. This is just ridiculous.

I sometimes wonder whether the people writing these courses have ever actually studied a foreign language themselves or tried teaching live students, using their materials.

As well as being a very experienced teacher, I have studied Italian, French, German, Spanish, Russian, Greek and Portuguese.

My e-book, Italian for Beginners, introduces grammatical concepts in a logical order. The exercises involve ONLY language you've already learnt, so you understand everything, completely, as you go along and you NEVER just have to remember something without knowing exactly what it means and how it works. If you understand WHY something is as it is, you can remember it so much more easily.

Professional voice-over artist Amedea De Cataldis recorded the audio for this Accurate Italian package. She has good, clear, native-Italian pronunciation for you to copy with confidence.

Many of the words introduced at the beginning of the course are recorded for you, so you can check your pronunciation as you go along. Later in the course, there are three longer recordings that tell little stories. By the time you get to these, you’ll not only be able to understand them completely but you’ll be at the stage where you could have written the stories yourself in Italian.

The audio is embedded in the e-books, which means the package is all super-easy to use. You also receive the audio files separately, so you can copy them on to a CD or into your MP3 player.

The bonuses to this package (see below) include an Italian Pronunciation Guide (both written and audio) and three audio recordings additional to those in Italian for Beginners.

Whenever I’ve been on holiday to Italy I’ve always been too embarrassed to try speaking the language. I didn’t know enough words, couldn’t form a sentence and my accent was terrible. Accurate Italian has changed all that. I’ve gone from nothing to being able to hold a conversation in Italian. A truly satisfying process, and much easier than expected. I can’t recommend it enough!

Grammar gives you independence

People often ask me if it’s possible to learn Italian without studying grammar and I explain that, contrary to what you may have felt at school, grammar is your friend, not your enemy, and works as a roadmap to the language.

The reason phrase books are frustrating is that, because they don’t explain anything, you remain completely dependent on them.

If you don’t learn the grammar, you have to learn parrot-fashion every single sentence you might possibly want to say and the predicted answers to each one. Imagine what hard work that would be!! Well, of course, it’s impossible. OK, you can read out – or even point to – an approximation of what you want to say in the phrase book… but how much fun is that? It’s not always effective either, because you need to understand the answer as well.

However, if you do learn the grammar, you know how the language fits together. You can then work out for yourself how to construct a sentence and understand what the other person says back. This liberates you from the tyranny of the phrase book to interact naturally with Italians.

As an opera singer, Italian is one of the major singing languages. When singing in Italian you can always get a literal translation, so you know what each word means and, together with a synopsis of the Opera, this provides a good background to the words and the music. However, this approach can never provide more than a very basic understanding of the language. At Music College I did have Italian lessons but it all seemed so confusing and I never felt confident with the verbs and the tenses. However, this has all changed since I found Accurate Italian. You can go at your own pace, everything is very clearly explained and, in no time at all, you can make real progress. It’s simple, structured and a very well developed course – it’s also good fun.

Say what you mean!

There are a lot of traps for the unwary foreigner trying to speak Italian without having studied the language properly.

  • Can you be sure, for example, that you’re ordering pesce (fish) and not pesche (peaches)?

  • Can you be sure you’re saying anno (year) and not ano (anus)? Petto (chest) and not peto (fart)? Penne (pens) and not pene (penis)?

  • Do you want to say sono inglese (I’m English) or sono inglesi (they’re English)?

  • Do you know when to say so (I know) and when to say conosco (I know)?

  • Do you know when to say tu (you), when to say Lei (you) and when to say voi (you)?

My previous experience of Italian courses was not good (lots of different books and tapes that were difficult to follow) and the result was that, although I reached a reasonable level of reading Italian, my oral performance remained poor. Accurate Italian provides everything one needs (advice, explanation and audio) in a convenient package and is a much more sensible approach than the ones I've tried before.

Now that I've properly got to grips with the language, holidays in Italy have become much more enjoyable and stress free. I feel confident that what I'm saying is correct, because I now understand how Italian works, so I don't have to keep just guessing and hoping they'll know what I mean.

I have been going to Italy with my husband for the past 10 years; we have a house and sometimes spend a couple of weeks or a couple of months there. My husbands Italian is good, but for me I couldn’t get past first base, I had quite a lot of words but couldn’t put them together to make sentences. I would feel isolated because I didn’t understand and the embarrassment only got worse over the years. Then I discovered Accurate Italian and didn’t look back, it has completely changed my life, I love our village, I love our friends, and I want to be in Italy the whole time. We have parties which I would never have had the confidence to host. It was the best method of learning for me everything was so logical, and with an approach which filled me with confidence. I would highly recommend it!
